Field Procedures for upgrading PROVue 1.xx to PROVue 2.0


This document presents the needed steps to upgrade an existing field installation of Flow Data’s PROVue (1.xx) to PROVue 2.0. To upgrade the PROVue, field personnel will need to replace the Operating system micro (O/S) card contained in the Central Processing Unit (CPU) and re-route or replace the LAN cable connected to the PROVue unit. The following items will be needed for the upgrade:

  • Two extra PROVue units per region

  • Two -5/16 inch wrenches

  • Philips screwdriver

  • Zip ties

  • New 64 GB O/S card

  • Extended CAT-6 cable to reach side communication port on PROVue

NOTE: Do not perform the upgrade if it is raining, or windy enough to allow dust to get into the PROVue electronics during the upgrade.

Perform the following steps to upgrade the PROVue unit to 2.0:

  1. Power down the PROVue unit only – not the entire panel.

  2. See the figure below showing the back plate of the PROVue, and disconnect in the following order:

  3. Disconnect power harness. After disengaging from connector on lower left, push the remaining portion of the white Molex connector so that it is hanging free behind the PROVue back plate.

  4. Remove TCP (LAN) cable.

  5. Disconnect Wi Fi antenna. After disconnecting the antenna, route the Wi-Fi antenna out the opening on the right side of the back plate. This will prevent it from becoming entangled when the PROVue back plate is removed.

  6. Remove the four screws and four nuts that secure the PROVue back plate, and remove the back cover.

  7. Remove the CPU (see figure below) by pulling outward on the spring mechanism holding the CPU in place.

Pulling outward on the spring will release the CPU to the position shown in the following figure where it can be removed from the board.

NOTE: Do not perform the upgrade if it is raining, or windy enough to allow dust to get into the PROVue electronics during the upgrade. Also, handle the wire harness with care to prevent breakage at the point where harness is soldered to circuit board (See figure above.)

  1. Remove the CPU from the board, and turn over to expose the micro O/S card as shown in the following figure.

  2. Orient the board so that the micro O/S card is at the bottom as shown in figure above. With this orientation, gently slide the silver cover to the left until it pops open and the old O/S card can be exposed as shown below.

NOTE: Avoid touching the gold leads of the CPU or O/S card. The oils in the skin can damage the leads. (See figure above.)

  1. Slide out the old micro O/S card and place in a Ziploc bag. (This should be returned to Flow Data’s QC Department for reuse.)

  1. Place a new 64 GB micro O/S card into the silver cover. Then slide the cover in place to the right until it locks into place.

  2. Replace the CPU by inserting at about a 30 to 40 degree angle as shown in figure below.

  3. Once it is in place as shown above, press down until it snaps into place as shown in figure below.

NOTE: If CPU is not seated correctly, it will not clip into place. DO NOT force it. Remove CPU and reseat it.

  1. Power the PROVue up, before replacing the back plate cover. You may need to scroll the screens to find the PROVue icon.

NOTE: When the PROVue boots up, V2.2R4-6200 should appear on the boot up page.

  1. Verify the PROVue screen image is clear with no white lines. If all clear continue. If not power down and reseat the micro O/S card and CPU again.

  2. Power the PROVue down.

  3. Replace the back cover of the PROVue. (See figure below.)

  4. Connect the new CAT-6 cable with the side port of the PROVue. In most cases this will require removing the old cable from the harness and replacing with a new longer cable that will reach the LAN port on the side of the PROVue. (See figure above.)

NOTE: It is important to keep tension off the CAT-6 cable. (See figure above.)

  1. Place the male side of the Molex connector back into the back cover.

  2. Place the Wi-Fi antenna back into the back cover.

  3. Secure the harness with zip ties so that there is no tension on the LAN connector

  4. Power the PROVue back on and verify clear display.

NOTE: The PROVue will have the following IP address: 10.147.160.100.

  1. From the web browser, connect into the PROVue and add a controller.

  2. Set IP of controller, APPLY, Check Comm, Read Tree; then APPLY.

  3. Verify PROVue has correct configuration displayed.

  4. Add the following 3-minute trend tags:

Every run: (1) Tubing, (2) Casing, (3) Flow rate, and (4) Static

Every tank: (1) Level, (2) Interface, and (3) Tank temperature

Every tank Group: (1) Total Level Volume, and (2) Total Interface Volume

  1. Wait until Database Write is finished.

  1. Reboot PROVue using black button on bottom of PROVue. (See figure below.) There are 2 black buttons. One has the solder wires (this is the back button) the other is the reboot button.

  2. Update the PadManager firmware to version MgrFrmwr_NET_v2_00_00_6225.out

  3. A checklist for the upgrade must be completely filled out as shown in the sample checklist on the following page. (Return the completed forms to Mike Gemmell - mikegemmell@flow-data.com)
